TIL my buddy thinks you should always use a primer before painting anything
Honestly, he said it over beers last Friday, talking about his kitchen cabinets. He was so sure it was a rule. But I just redid my bedroom in Omaha without primer because the old paint was fine, and it looks great after 8 months. I think people just say it without thinking. When have you actually skipped primer and it was totally fine?

What color was the old paint?

My old apartment in Lincoln had beige walls I painted a light gray. No primer, just two coats of a good quality paint. That was five years ago and my friend who lives there now says it still looks perfect. The key is the old paint was in good shape, not glossy, and the new color was close.

My buddy painted his kitchen green over dark yellow without primer and it's held up great for three years now. The trick is making sure the old paint is clean and not too shiny, just like you said. Did you have to do any sanding or just wash the walls before you painted?
