Appreciation post: My neighbor's comment about my deck stain job

I was putting a second coat of Behr solid color stain on my deck last month when my neighbor, Frank, leaned over the fence and said, 'You know, that stuff hides a lot, but it peels like crazy in a year.' He convinced me to strip it all off and switch to a penetrating oil finish instead, which was a huge pain but looks way better now. Has anyone else made a last-minute switch on a big project like that?

Did Frank offer to help strip it, or just give the bad news?

Man, why do neighbors always wait until you're halfway done to drop that kind of bomb? That sounds like a total nightmare, stripping all that off. I did something similar with a bathroom tile job once, tore up a whole floor because someone mentioned the pattern was laid wrong. The extra work kills you, but you're right, it's worth it to not hate the result later.

Ugh, that's the worst. My buddy built a whole deck, like three weekends of work, before his dad came over and quietly pointed out the support posts weren't sunk below the frost line. He had to rip out the entire frame and start over. He was so mad, but now he's glad he fixed it before the whole thing shifted.
