Just realized I've been caulking tubs wrong for like 8 years

I always smoothed the bead with my finger but it kept getting that thin edge that peels off after a few months. A tiler buddy walked by my bathroom last weekend and said 'you gotta tool it with a little plastic scraper instead, finger leaves too much moisture.' He showed me on one edge and the finish was way cleaner. Anyone else pick up bad habits from just never being told different?

Ugh yeah finger caulking is a total rookie move.

The finger thing is such a trap because everyone's dad or grandpa shows them that move. I switched to using those little silicone tools you can get in a pack for like five bucks, way less messy and no more weird moisture issues.

Oh I remember reading something about how those silicone tools can actually be harder to clean properly if you're not careful. Some folks were saying they trap bacteria in the little nooks and crannies if you don't dry them right. But yeah, I get not wanting the finger moisture thing, that's always been a bit off-putting to me too.
