My dad said to never use a regular screw in drywall without an anchor, and my bathroom shelf collapsing at 2 AM proved his point.

My uncle Bob lost a whole mirror that way. The sound of it crashing down at night is the worst. Dads are always right about this stuff.

Honestly, I've put plenty of screws straight into drywall and they've held for years. You just need to find a stud. That shelf was probably put in a bad spot or had too much weight on it. My towel rack is just on screws, no anchors, and it's fine. Sometimes the old rules are just overly cautious.

Huh, that's a fair point about the stud. But I'd argue the old rules exist because most people don't cut into drywall to check if they're in a stud before they hang something. Your mileage may vary, but a quick anchor is cheap insurance if you're wrong.
