I bought a 'pro' drafting table that was a total waste of $800

Back when I was starting out, I saved up and bought this huge, fancy drafting table with a motorized lift and a built-in light box. The sales guy swore it would change my work. It was a nightmare. The motor was loud and slow, the light box had a weird green tint that made my prints look off, and the whole thing was so big I could barely fit it in my home office. I used it for maybe three months before I gave up and went back to my old, simple board on a basic stand. That thing just sat there for a year before I sold it for a fraction of the price. It taught me that a lot of the fancy gear is just for show. What's the most overhyped piece of drafting equipment you guys have bought?

Can't believe you paid $800 for that.

I mean, maybe it's not about the thing itself. Could be they're paying for the story or the access. Like, if that $800 gets you into a private group or a one-time experience, that's a different kind of value. Idk, sometimes the price tag is for more than just the object you walk away with.

Yeah, that "fancy gear is just for show" line hits home. My friend got talked into a super expensive French curve set, the kind in the fancy wooden box. He said the curves were so specific and weirdly shaped he never used them. They just looked important on his shelf. He went back to his three basic plastic curves he's had since college.
