My kid asked me what I do for work and I had to think about it

He's seven, and we were building a sandcastle at the beach last weekend. He asked, 'Dad, do you just move mud all day?' I told him, 'Sort of, but it's more like moving the whole ocean floor to build new things.' He looked at me and said, 'So you're a giant sea monster?' It made me realize I never explain the job in a fun way. How do you guys describe dredging to your family?

Told my niece I'm a professional sandbox cleaner for boats. She pictured me with a tiny shovel and bucket, which is pretty close. I said big ships need deep water to visit, so we scoop out the extra sand and mud to make room for them. Now she tells her friends her uncle makes swimming pools for cargo ships.

Used to just say I dig dirt from water. Felt boring. Then I saw @butler.abby's sandbox cleaner idea. Totally stole it for my nephew. Told him I use a giant vacuum to clean the river's bathtub so big toy boats can float. His eyes got huge. Now he asks me every week if the river is clean enough for the boats to play.
