Just learned drywall mud has a shelf life printed on the bucket

Honestly I never even looked at the date on my joint compound buckets until last week. I grabbed a bucket from the back of my truck that had been sitting since June 2023 and the mud was all grainy and clumpy. Checked the label and it said best by 10 months from manufacture. Now I rotate my stock like a grocery store and write the month I opened it with a sharpie on the lid. Has anybody else had a whole bucket go bad on them like that?

Rotate stock like a grocery store" is real. I lost a half full bucket of all purpose once because it sat too long. That grainy clumpy texture never lies, once it gets that way just toss it.

Wait, how long did you have that bucket before it went bad though? I'm trying to figure out if it was sitting for months or if it was just a few weeks and the flour itself was already old from the store. Because I've had a bag of unopened AP flour last me almost a year in my pantry and it was fine, but then another time I left a half used bag in the back of a warm cabinet for like 3 months and it turned into a solid brick. Was yours in a plastic bucket with the lid on tight or one of those paper bags that breathes a little?

Bet the temperature in your truck cooked it way faster than shelf life though.
