Taping a whole basement solo in 1998 compared to today

Three years ago I did a basement in Maplewood with my old crew, we mixed our own mud by hand and used paper tape for everything. Last week I watched a new guy do the same size room with all-purpose premix and fiberglass mesh tape in half the time. Has anyone else noticed the younger guys skipping the paper tape completely or is that just around here?

Oh man... fiberglass mesh is fine for patches but paper tape just bonds better in the long run. I've seen too many mesh joints crack on me over time to trust it for a whole basement. Younger guys love the speed though, can't blame 'em for that.

Nah, paper tape actually has a higher chance of cracking in a basement setting cause it needs a perfect mud bed to bond right. Mesh tape lets the mud push through the weave, which gives you a mechanical bond that holds up better on those cold concrete walls that move a bit. Ive pulled out plenty of paper joints that bubbled up from moisture behind them.
