Warning about that cheap corner bead from the big box store

I bought a bunch of the plastic corner bead for a basement job last month, cost me about $80 total. Figured it would be fine for a low traffic area. Two weeks later, the mud started cracking along every single joint where I used it. My boss came by, took one look, and said 'I told you that stuff is junk.' Had to rip it all out and switch to metal, which set the job back a full day. Has anyone found a plastic bead that actually holds up, or is metal the only real option?

Ever think maybe the mud mix was off? Hugo_schmidt has a point about tape, but I've seen that cheap plastic bead work fine when it's bedded right.

Did you use paper tape or mesh over the bead?
