Dropped $800 on spray foam insulation in my garage ceiling and it paid for itself in one winter.

My heating bill went down by about $120 a month after I sealed up that uninsulated garage ceiling, so I'm wondering if anyone else has seen similar savings or if I just got lucky with my setup?

Honestly, "paid for itself" is a stretch unless you're planning to sell next year.

My DIY skills mean my house almost pays for itself to be demolished.

I get what you're saying with "paid for itself" but I think people throw that phrase around way too casually. It's one thing if you're talking about a home improvement that bumps your sale price by a good amount, but most of the time you're just breaking even or losing a little. Unless you live somewhere with really hot real estate and you're flipping it fast, most updates don't magically give you back every dollar. A new kitchen or bathroom can help sell the place, sure, but it rarely comes close to what you put in. I think folks just like to feel better about spending all that money so they say it paid for itself.
