Skip the expensive moisture barrier, just use red rosin paper

I was about to drop $200 on that fancy plastic vapor barrier for my basement Reno. Someone on job site told me to just use the thick red rosin paper instead, costs like $30 a roll. Been 4 months since I finished the framing and insulation, no moisture issues at all. Anyone else use cheaper alternatives for stuff the big box stores push?
