Bought a $200 thermal camera for my phone a few years back
I was stuck on a weird power drain in a laptop that would not get hot anywhere you could feel. The camera showed a tiny surface mount resistor glowing like a coal under the CPU heatsink, a spot I never would have checked. Found the short, fixed the board, and it paid for itself that week. Anyone found a good cheap thermal option lately, or are the phone attachments still the way to go?

But is a laptop power drain really that big a deal? Morgan_ramirez might be onto something, but I'd just replace the whole board.

Actually, a power drain can be a huge deal if it's not fixed. It can kill your battery for good and cause other parts to overheat. Replacing the whole board is overkill for what's often a simple bad capacitor.
