A senior guy told me my car top clearance check was sloppy and it stuck with me
He said 'you're just eyeballing it, measure from the pit floor to the top of the car every time.' Now I always break out the tape measure first thing, even on routine jobs. Anyone else have a simple piece of advice that totally changed your routine?

Had a foreman drill into me to always check lug nut torque with a torque wrench, never just an impact. It seemed like extra work until I saw a wheel come loose. Now that click is the best sound in the shop.

It's a good example of how shortcuts often cost more time later. That extra minute with the torque wrench saves you from a comeback or a crash. Getting it right the first time is almost always faster in the long run.

Tell me about it, my old boss used to say my "calibrated eyeball" was off by a country mile. Now I picture that wheel flying off every time I'm tempted to skip the torque wrench. It's funny how one comment from a grumpy old timer can turn you into a total rule follower. Guess they were right about an ounce of prevention.
