Had to pick between a 2:1 or 1:1 roping setup on a job in Dallas last month
Went with the 2:1 for a 6-stop lowrise because the machine room was tight and I needed the car speed to still be decent. Anyone else run into situations where the gear ratio choice came down to shaft dimensions more than anything else?

You mentioned the "2:1 for a 6-stop lowrise" and that tight machine room. I actually read a forum post a while back where a guy was trying to cram a 1:1 setup into an old building shaft and it just wouldn't fit without major modifications. So the 2:1 really is the smarter call when the shaft's tiny and you still need that speed to make the stops quick. It's one of those things where the building's layout kind of makes the decision for you, not just the math on paper. I've heard it's pretty common on retrofits where the old machine room was never meant for modern gear.

Yeah, the "building's layout kind of makes the decision for you" part is so true, @sandrat24. Nothing worse than fighting an old shaft that wasn't built for modern gear, the 2:1 just takes the headache out of it.
