Just noticed a weird cable setup on an old Otis in a Denver hotel lobby

Was fixing a door lock at the Brown Palace in Denver last Tuesday and saw they had the governor ropes running through what looked like a repurposed conduit clamp, anyone else run into hacky field mods on historic lifts?

Why would you assume a field mod isn't perfectly safe if it's been working fine for years?

You've never seen a field mod start failing after a few years?

Holy cow, wait. You're saying it's been working FINE for a few years and that's supposed to prove it's safe? Man, that logic is wild to me. Things can hold up fine for a long time and then just let go all at once, especially with the heat cycles and vibration these things see. I've seen brand new parts fail out of the box, let alone something that was rigged up in someone's driveway. I don't get how "it hasn't blown up yet" equals "it's never going to blow up.
