Rant: Had to pick between a new traction motor or a full rewire on a 1987 Otis

The building owner in Springfield wanted the cheapest fix, but the motor was pulling 15% over spec and the wiring was original cloth. I went with the motor swap first, which got it running smooth for now, but I'm sure the wiring will be a problem next winter. Anyone dealt with a similar call where you had to patch one thing knowing another would fail soon?

Springfield's a tough market for old buildings. That cloth wiring is a ticking clock. Seen it fail in cold snaps when insulation gets brittle. Personally, I would have pushed harder for the rewire first. A new motor just buys time before the real fire hazard shows up.

Cold snaps making insulation brittle" is a real worry, but sometimes you have to fix the smoking motor NOW before you can even think about a full rewire.

Cloth wiring can last decades though.
