So I bought this $200 'magic' high-frequency wand for a client's back acne...

The thing sparked and popped like a tiny firework show every time I touched it to her skin. We both jumped so hard she almost fell off the table. Anyone have a high-frequency machine they actually trust?

The "solid construction" point from @the_morgan is fair, but I've seen the opposite. My old salon's tank of a machine from the 80s was a total spark factory, it just had moody wiring. Meanwhile, my basic $150 wand has been fine for two years because I keep the glass clean and the gel applied right. I feel like a lot of the sparking is less about cheap parts and more about user error or old, dried out insulation, even on the "pro" units.

Totally see that in other stuff too, like how a cheap kettle can last years if you descale it but a fancy one dies from neglect.

Yeah, those cheap wands are just badly made. The good ones have insulated glass electrodes and a steady current. I had a client bring in her own from Amazon once, and it smelled like burning plastic. My old studio had a professional machine from the 90s that never sparked once. You really need solid construction, not just a fancy box.
