My smart speaker started recommending stuff based on a private conversation

I was joking with my partner about getting a pet lizard, and the next day my YouTube feed was full of terrarium setup videos. It clicked that the mic is always listening, not just for the wake word. Has anyone else had a 'private' chat turn into targeted ads?

Oh man, I just set a hard phone curfew last week. It stopped me from reading scary stuff right before bed. I sleep way better now.

That "scary stuff right before bed" thing is so real. I mean, it's not just the bad dreams, it's like your brain gets stuck in that alert mode. I tried the same curfew and it felt impossible at first, but now I just plug my phone in across the room. It's crazy how much quieter my head is when I'm not staring at a screen last thing.
