Last month my dad insisted I was overwatering my tomato plants

I have 6 plants in my backyard here in Everett. He told me to back way off and only water them every 4 days. I thought he was crazy because July is so hot. But I tried it for 2 weeks and the leaves stopped turning yellow and I got way more tomatoes than last year. Has anyone else had success with watering less often?

My neighbor in Everett actually told me the same thing about his roses last month, and I've noticed this whole "less is more" thing keeps popping up with ferns and even my lawn when I stopped babying it.

and I swear I read something similar in an old gardening book my dad had from the 80s. It talked about how plants that get too much water and fertilizer end up with weaker root systems because they don't have to work for anything. They get lazy basically. Same with lawns, if you stop cutting it so short and let the clippings rot back in, the soil gets healthier on its own. I've been trying it with my hostas this year and they're actually looking better than when I was obsessing over them every weekend.

Watering less and leaving the clippings on the lawn made a bigger difference than all the fancy products I tried before. People way overthink this stuff, the plants pretty much tell you what they need.
