Hit 500 signatures on my Everett petition and it totally changed my view on local activism

I started that petition about the Crossroads crosswalk back in February, honestly just to vent. Figured maybe 50 people would sign if I bugged my neighbors. Then yesterday I checked and it was at 503. Seeing actual names from the apartments by the library and the little mechanic shop on Broadway made me realize people actually pay attention to the small stuff. Has anyone else here been surprised by how quickly a local issue can pick up steam?

Shoutout to the guy at the Everett Public Library who showed me the stats on local homeless programs

I used to think the city was wasting money on the shelter expansion down on Smith Ave. But last week I was at the library waiting for a meeting and overheard this guy talking to a staff member about the annual city report. He showed me the numbers on his phone - the outreach program brought 180 people into permanent housing last year alone, at like $12,000 per person. That's way cheaper than ER visits and jail time. Now I get why they keep funding it. Has anyone else seen the full report from 2024?

Blew $60 on a so-called 'local' parking pass that didn't even work

Grabbed a discounted parking pass from a dude near the Everett Marina last weekend, thought I was getting a steal. Turns out the QR code was already used, and I had to fork over another $15 for a legit spot at the lot by the farmers market. Anyone else run into fake passes around here?

Can't believe people still park in the bike lane on Broadway when there's a whole empty lot right behind the coffee shop

I counted 7 cars blocking the lane during my morning commute yesterday and nearly got doored by a driver who didn't check before opening, has anyone else had close calls like that around the downtown area?

Why the farmer's market near my house stopped taking cards

I hit up the Everett farmer's market last Saturday morning like I do every week. Went to grab a dozen eggs from my usual guy and he told me no more cards, cash only starting today. He said the Square reader fees were eating up like 3% of every sale and he lost $200 last month just on processing. Now I gotta remember to hit the ATM before I go or I'm stuck with just my phone. Has anyone else noticed their local vendors switching to cash only recently?

TIL pouring cold water on a grease fire is worse than I ever imagined

I was grilling burgers last Saturday in my backyard here in north Everett and the drip tray caught fire. Without thinking I grabbed a cup of water from my hose and threw it on there. The fireball shot up about three feet and singed my arm hair off. My neighbor Mike ran over with a baking soda box and dumped it on the flames. Took about 10 seconds to put out but my heart was pounding for the rest of the night. I learned that grease fires need oxygen cut off not dilution. Now I keep a metal lid and a box of baking soda right next to my grill at all times. Has anyone else made this mistake or am I the only dummy here?

PSA: Stop using leaf blowers on dry dirt in Everett

Every morning I see guys blowing dust clouds across their yards and into the street. I run a tree service here and I know for a fact that bare soil just needs a layer of mulch or compost, not a blower. Has anyone else noticed how much dust hangs in the air near the Snohomish River on those dry days?

Hit 50,000 miles on my truck and it finally clicked for me

I was driving home from the Everett Safeway last Tuesday and saw my odometer roll over to exactly 50,000 miles. I bought this truck brand new in 2018 and I thought I was just driving around town doing normal stuff. But when I did the math, that's like driving across the country 16 times. Most of those miles are just me going to work at the Boeing plant and back, plus weekend trips up to Stevens Pass. It made me realize how much of life happens in these little 10-mile routes you don't even think about. Has anyone else had that moment where a number on your dash just kind of shocks you into seeing your routine differently?

Spent $40 on a rain barrel and it paid for itself in 3 months

I got one of those 50-gallon rain barrels from the Everett hardware store last spring. Between watering my garden and washing my car, my water bill dropped enough that it covered the cost by July. Has anyone else tried cutting down on their water usage around here?

I was over at the Everett Marina last Saturday and saw this one heron parked on the same piling for like three hours straight. Has anyone else noticed that bird just hanging out or am I seeing things?

Downtown Everett crosswalk signal broke mid-crossing and I almost got hit

I was crossing Hewitt and Broadway last Tuesday when the walk signal just stopped working halfway through. The countdown froze at 8 seconds and then went blank, so I had to jog across while a pickup was already creeping into the intersection. I reported it to the city public works line on my phone right after, and they said they'd send someone by Wednesday. Has anyone else had a pedestrian signal glitch out like that downtown? Did they actually fix it or just ignore it?

Had a run-in with a sketchy tree service guy at the Everett marina last weekend

I was down at the marina fixing some peeling paint on a boathouse when this guy rolled up offering to trim trees for half the going rate. He didn't have any insurance papers or a business license when I asked, so I just told him no thanks. Has anyone else had luck finding reliable contractors around here without getting burned?

Debate: Should the city fix the sinkhole on Hewitt or just pave around it like they did with the last one?

So there's this big crack forming over by the 7-Eleven on Hewitt Ave, been there since last Tuesday's rain. I saw the city crew come out, throw a patch on it, and leave. Meanwhile my neighbor says they should dig the whole thing up and redo the drainage pipe underneath, said it'll cost maybe $8k but save headaches later. Which side do you fall on? Have you ever seen a patch job actually hold on Everett streets, or do we just keep slapping bandaids on everything?

I finally had my washing machine flood the basement after years of ignoring a weird noise

Last Tuesday I was doing laundry like normal and went down to grab clothes and stepped in about an inch of water. That grinding sound I'd been hearing for like 6 months finally meant something was actually breaking. I spent the next three hours using a wet vac and every towel I own to soak it all up. Turns out the drum bearing just gave out completely and sent water everywhere. I called a repair guy who quoted me $450 to fix it which is basically half the cost of a new machine. So now I'm stuck deciding if I just buy a new one or try to patch this thing up myself. Has anyone else dealt with a sudden washer flood and just said forget it and bought new? What brand did you pick that actually lasted more than a couple years?

Went to the old Everett library branch yesterday, felt like stepping back in time

Stopped by the Evergreen Branch on 41st. Not the new one, the old one that's still standing. The shelves are shorter now, packed tighter. Kids were reading on the floor like I used to. Same creaky floorboards by the reference desk. Anyone else remember when they had that big globe in the corner?

PSA: That $60 Everett Community Center yoga pass I bought was a total scam

I signed up for a 10-class yoga pass at the Everett Community Center back in January. Figured it was a good deal since I live right down the street on Colby Ave. First class was fine, but the second one got canceled because the instructor didn't show up. Then the third class they moved to a different room with no warning and it was freezing cold. By the fourth try, I realized they kept changing the schedule every week without emailing anyone. I finally gave up after only using 3 classes out of 10. That's $60 down the drain basically. Has anyone else had luck with those passes or am I just unlucky with the schedule changes?

PSA: The bike path near the marina is flooding bad today

I ride the waterfront trail by the Everett Marina almost every day, but this morning around 7 AM it was completely underwater near the boat launch area. A big storm drain got clogged with leaves and debris sometime overnight, and now there's a 3 foot wide puddle that goes right across the path. I almost ate it trying to ride through it - my tires slipped and I had to jump off. I called the city public works line (425-257-8821) and they said they'd send someone out by noon, but that's hours away for folks commuting right now. Has anyone else run into this or found a good detour route through the neighborhood?
