That new crosswalk timer near the library is way too short

I was grabbing a latte at the Everett Coffee Co. on Colby Ave last Tuesday and heard a guy going off about the new pedestrian signals near the library. He said the countdown timer is only 12 seconds for a 4-lane road, which doesn't give older folks enough time to cross. I actually timed it on my way out, and he was right. It makes me wonder if the city even walked that intersection before installing them. Has anyone else noticed this causing problems or near misses in the mornings?

...and my buddy Dave actually saw it happen last Thursday. Some old guy with a walker got stuck halfway and had to shuffle back to the curb while cars were already gunning it from the light change. If the city planners aren't gonna walk that crosswalk themselves they should at least watch the security footage for a week.

Yeah, "shuffle back to the curb while cars were already gunning it" - that's the nightmare scenario right there. Reminds me of the time my granddad tried to cross a six-lane road near his old apartment and got stranded on the median strip for a full light cycle because the timing was that bad. He said a guy in a pickup actually honked at him like he was the problem. City planners really do need to watch the footage, but they probably figure once they put the crosswalk in, their job's done. It's always the people who actually have to use the thing who pay for their shortcuts.
