Hit 37 yards of fabric for a single piece and it changed my whole approach

I was drafting a dramatic evening gown and kept adding more volume to the skirt. When I finally added up all the panels, it came to 37 yards of silk duchess satin. That number made me stop and actually sketch the pattern pieces to scale for the first time. Seeing how much material it would really take forced me to simplify the design and focus on smarter cutting. Has anyone else had a fabric estimate shock them into a redesign?

Did you think you were making a dress or a parachute for a blimp? 37 yards is the kind of number that makes you check if your calculator is broken. I had a similar wake-up call trying to line a coat with what felt like enough wool to knit sweaters for a whole kindergarten class. That's when you learn the real skill is cutting clever, not just buying out the whole fabric store.

Yeah I used to just buy extra to be safe, but joelwells is right about cutting clever. Wasting less fabric actually makes me plan better and the final piece looks cleaner. Changed my whole approach.

Honestly, that "buying out the whole fabric store" feeling is too real. I used to do the same thing with wood for projects, just piling up "extra" that became kindling later. Getting it right the first time is way more satisfying (and cheaper, obviously).
