I used to think all zippers were basically the same until I saw a breakdown of YKK's 10,000+ variations.

Found a chart on a technical sewing blog showing the different teeth materials and slider types, and now I'm rethinking the whole closure on my current jacket pattern, has anyone swapped a coil for a molded tooth zip for a specific look?

Honestly thought a zipper was just a zipper too, lol. That YKK chart is a real eye-opener. I had this one bag project where the thin coil zip just looked cheap and flimsy. Swapped it for a chunky molded tooth one in a dark bronze, and it completely changed the whole vibe, made it feel way more solid and expensive. It's wild how much the hardware details matter.

Swapped a coil for a molded plastic zip on a windbreaker last year for that chunkier, more technical look. The coil was fine but felt too soft for the fabric. The molded teeth gave it a much sharper outline, especially in a contrasting color. Just remember, the slider mechanism is different, so you might need to adjust your seam allowance a tiny bit where the pull tab sits. Totally worth it for the style change though.
