Clay soil made post holes impossible until I wet the ground first.
The water loosens the dirt and saves hours of backbreaking work.

Slipped in wet clay once and ruined my jeans.

Oh that reminds me of something I read in a pottery magazine once. They said professional studios are really strict about the exact wetness of their clay before working with it. The article explained how being off by even a small amount in the water content makes the clay tear or slump on the wheel. It made me realize how much skill is in just getting the material to the right state before you even start shaping it. That careful timing Brooke mentioned is probably the whole secret to keeping it together, literally.

Ever try to figure out the perfect amount of time to let the water soak in first? Let it sit too short and it's still like concrete, but wait too long and you're just dealing with a muddy soup. I found a sweet spot by doing a test hole with a little water and checking it every half hour. It completely changes the job from impossible to just plain hard work.
