Struggling with clay soil turned me into a power auger fan.
Hand tools can't compete with the speed and ease.

Broke two shovels before I gave up and used an auger.

What kind of shovels were you using? A decent fiberglass handle should NOT snap under normal digging. If @felixfisher broke two, my guess is you hit some seriously rocky soil or maybe a buried root. Those conditions wreck regular tools. An auger was the right call, it powers through that stuff. Shovel steel can bend or the tip can roll over if you hit a hidden rock, too.
