Understand your frustration! I grabbed a banded rock from a riverbed once, deep red and cream stripes that looked too perfect. Carried it around for months before a park ranger told me it was likely sandstone with mineral stains. Felt so cool to finally solve the mystery.

That's true but it misses the bigger point. Coolant breaks down from heat cycles and chemical changes, not just getting dirty. The anti-corrosion additives get used up. Old coolant turns acidic and eats away at aluminum parts like the water pump or heater core. You can filter it all day and still end up with a system full of rust and jelly. Testing it yearly is the only real way to know.
