That old post pounder finally gave up on me yesterday afternoon

I was setting a line of cedar posts for a backyard job in Springfield, and the head just sheared right off the handle on the third hit. Thing was probably 15 years old, a hand-me-down from my dad. I had to run to the rental place and grab a gas-powered one to finish the day, which set me back $85. It was a real pain, but I guess I got my money's worth out of the old tool. Do you guys have a set number of seasons you use a pounder for, or just run it until it breaks?

My 20-year-old Craftsman finally cracked last spring, so I just welded it back together.

Feel like I run my tools until they're held together by rust and hope. My old post pounder is basically just a collection of rattling parts at this point, and I'm pretty sure the only thing keeping it going is my own fear of the rental place bill. Honestly, I'm impressed yours made it 15 years, that's a good run for a hand-me-down. I'd say you got your money's worth and then some, even with that last minute rental fee.

Remember my buddy's ancient rototiller that sounded like a bag of hammers? He kept it alive with baling wire and prayers until the engine literally locked up in the middle of his garden. We found metal shavings in the oil pan that looked like glitter. He still talks about that machine like it was a old friend that went out fighting.
