Update: My fences are finally straight every time

A string line and level beat eyeballing it by a mile.

Well, the string line and level kinda ruins the fun of fixing a crooked fence every spring, doesn't it.

Actually, I used to agree with that feeling completely. Fixing my fence every spring was a yearly habit, something I looked forward to. But then one year the posts were SO crooked they started pulling out of the ground, and I had to replace three sections. Using a string line and level the next time saved me HOURS of work and actually made the fence stronger. Now I see it as smart prep, not ruining the fun, because a straight fence lasts way longer.

Have you read about how a small bit of prep can save so much time later? I heard from an old timer at the hardware store that a straight fence built right the first time means you get to enjoy your yard more, not just fix it. @terry_moore, I get the charm of yearly fixes, but after my fence fell over in a storm, I learned the hard way. Using a level and string might seem boring, but it turns a chore into a one-time job. Now I have free weekends instead of wrestling with posts every spring.
