Hot take: I finally nailed my grandma's biscuit recipe after 20 years of dense hockey pucks.

The trick was using frozen butter and grating it into the flour, which I tried last Sunday. Has anyone else had a family recipe that just wouldn't work until one small change?

Honestly I think people overcomplicate family recipes. My grandma's biscuits were perfect every time and she just used room temp Crisco, nothing fancy. All this grating frozen butter feels like a food trend, not real cooking. Sometimes the problem isn't the recipe, it's the baker not having a light enough touch with the dough. Why fix what isn't broken?

My buddy tried to make his mom's pie crust with frozen butter because some chef said to, and it was a total mess. He went back to her simple shortening recipe and it worked perfectly. Guess some things just don't need updating.
