Just realized how overrated fancy toast is after a trip to Austin

I went to a cafe there that charged $14 for avocado toast with edible flowers. It was fine, but honestly, my own kitchen version is just as good for a fraction of the price. Does anyone else think we've hit peak toast hype?

That Guardian article from 2017 really kicked off a whole wave of people acting like avocado toast was ruining the economy. Dakota nailed it, it's just toast with stuff on top, same as my grandma's tomato sandwiches. The hype is more about cafes charging a premium for a trendy look than the food itself being worth the fuss.

Oh for crying out loud. It's toast with avocado on it, not a house down payment. People have been putting stuff on bread since the dawn of sliced loaves. I remember when tomato and mayo on white bread was considered a decent lunch. Now suddenly we're acting like a cafe charging $14 for smashed green spread is some kind of cultural crisis. The whole "millennial avocado toast" thing just feels like folks looking for something to be annoyed about. Sometimes a fancy breakfast is a nice treat, sometimes it's a ripoff, but let's not pretend it's any deeper than that.

Seriously, I read an article that called avocado toast a "luxury good for millennials" and it made me laugh. I mean, it's mashed avocado on bread, not a car. The whole thing feels like a weird flex now.

That article was from The Guardian in 2017, but the joke got old fast. It's just expensive bread now.
