Been ramming my green sand molds way too hard for years. My foreman in Toledo just tapped one with his knuckle and said 'listen, it should sound like a ripe melon, not a brick'.

Bricks hold up better under heat though.

Yeah but a brick mold can cause all kinds of problems. If it's too hard, you get gas defects and the metal can't feed properly during shrinkage. That ripe melon sound means you've got the right balance of strength and permeability.

Try tapping the mold with a screwdriver handle instead of your knuckle. You get a clearer sound that way, and you save your hand. It's a simple trick that makes judging the pack way easier.
