My buddy Mike at the Lima foundry had a core shift on a 12-ton pump housing last year. They had to scrap the whole thing, cost them nearly a week of downtime. The sand core just wasn't seated right in the mold before they poured.

Man, that's brutal about Mike's pump housing, @the_john. A similar thing happened to a friend of mine who works at a smaller casting shop. They had a core wash on a big valve body, which is basically when the metal flow moves the core. The whole casting was junk, and the cleanup was a nightmare. Just shows how one tiny thing going wrong with the sand can cost a fortune.
