Shoutout to the guy who showed me his sand mulling trick at the regional conference in Cleveland last fall

I used to just run our muller for the standard 8 minutes, but after seeing his method of checking the sand's 'ball' consistency every 90 seconds, I cut our scrap rate from bad molds by almost 20% in three months, so what's your best trick for judging sand readiness?

Honestly, that ball test is a game changer. We used to just go by the clock too and it was so hit or miss. Tbh my best trick now is the squeeze and break check. I grab a handful, squeeze it hard, then try to snap the lump. If it breaks clean with a little edge, it's perfect. If it crumbles or just mushes, you know right away it needs more mulling or less water.

That squeeze and break check is solid. I do something similar but also press my thumb into the lump after squeezing. If it holds the thumbprint without cracking too much, you're golden. Takes the guesswork out for sure.
