Noticing a shift from practical to pretty in garden fences lately
Back in the day, most folks around here used basic wire mesh to keep rabbits out. Now I see a lot of decorative wooden slats and even living walls with ivy. It's nice, but sometimes I wonder if the new styles really keep pests away as well. My neighbor's fancy lattice fence looks great, but I've seen squirrels hopping right over it.

My cousin in Denver has a pretty fence with hidden wire lining inside. It actually stops rabbits BETTER than my old plain mesh ever did. The key is adding function behind the fancy look.

Man, I feel this. My first pretty fence was all looks and zero function, rabbits chewed right through the bottom. What finally worked was putting a double layer of hardware cloth buried a foot deep around the base, then covering it with those nice looking wooden boards. It keeps the groundhogs out and still looks clean from the yard side. You gotta build the fortress first, then make it pretty.
