My dad called my bike commute a phase. It's been five years.

Isn't it funny how people call things a phase when they just don't get it? I read this article a while back about how any habit that seems different to someone gets labeled temporary. Five years is a solid chunk of your life, not some trend you're trying out. Has your dad ever changed his mind or is he still waiting for this "phase" to end?

Ugh yes, my family still says that about my music taste.

Actually some things really are just phases though. People change all the time. Remember when @jamesf26 was super into that one band and now he barely talks about them? That's normal. Calling something a phase isn't always about not getting it, sometimes it's just seeing that people grow and their interests shift. Five years can feel long but it doesn't mean forever. Maybe your dad is just noticing how often people do move on from stuff.
