Update: My field kit now includes a cheap hardness test tool

I was trying to identify some minerals from a creek bed last week and kept getting stuck on hardness. So I bought a set of common items like a penny, a steel nail, and a glass plate. You can scratch the rock with each one to narrow it down fast. It saved me so much time compared to just guessing.
