I just finished my 500th yard of broom finish this year

I was adding up my invoices from the last few months and the total hit 500 square yards. It hit me that I've been doing this for 15 years and never kept track like that before. It made me realize how much of our work is that specific finish, especially on driveways here in the suburbs. I started thinking about all the brooms I've worn out to get here (probably 20 of them). Has anyone else ever tallied up a specific finish type they do over a season? I'm curious if that's a normal number or if I'm just in a broom finish rut.

Remember when 'fruit punch' meant actual fruit?

I grabbed a bottle of Sunny Day Fruit Punch at the store last week, thinking it would be like the stuff my mom made. The front label had pictures of oranges and strawberries, but the ingredients list showed it was just water, high fructose corn syrup, and red 40. Not a single drop of real juice. It tasted like sweetened water with food coloring. What other drinks are hiding behind pictures of fruit?

Pro tip: Our city's new sidewalk specs call for a broom finish, but I think a trowel finish holds up better against salt.

Trowel finished sidewalks handle de icing salt better than the broom finish our city requires.

Appreciation post: That simple herb box I made for the kitchen

I built a basic wooden box to hold herbs on my kitchen windowsill. It was a quick project with some scrap wood and a few screws. Now when I grab some thyme, I remember my grandma's kitchen where she kept parsley in old coffee tins. She never bought herbs from the store, always grew them on the porch. This little box saves me trips to the grocery store for overpriced bundles. It's surprising how such a small thing can make cooking feel different. My cat tries to eat the chives, which is its own problem.
