I used to bang on the wall when my neighbor's bass was too loud at 2am.

After six months of this, my other neighbor told me it just made them turn it up more because they thought I was dancing. Now I just call the non-emergency line after the first warning, and it's been way better. Does anyone have a good way to talk to someone who just doesn't care about noise?

Have you tried leaving a polite note on their door? In my experience, a short note that just says you work early or have a baby can sometimes work when a face to face talk might start a fight. It makes you a person, not just a noise complaint. If that fails, calling the non emergency line is the right move, some people just won't listen.

Leaving a note is a solid idea. My old neighbor used to blast music every weekend. I wrote a note and it actually worked for a few months. Then he got a new stereo and it started all over again. The non emergency line had to get involved in the end. Some folks just don't care until there's an official record.

That note idea sounds good on paper, but it's a gamble. You might get a decent neighbor, or you might get someone who takes it as a challenge to find louder bass. Miles_sanchez has the right idea about the official record being the only thing that works for some people. It's sad when being polite just shows them where your line is so they can dance right over it.
