Giving a wave to sidewalk superintendents isn't a waste of time

Lots of guys think you should just focus on your machine and ignore everyone else. I disagree because taking a second to smile or wave can change how the public sees our job. Last week, a mom brought her kids over to watch, and after a brief talk, they left excited instead of annoyed.

My buddy said a crane operator waved at his kid once.

Ever notice how the smallest bit of human contact can lift the whole mood of a street? I make a point of saying a quick hello to the same neighbor each morning when I get my paper, and over months it's turned a stranger into a friendly face. That kind of stuff builds up a community feel, bit by bit. Your wave from the cab does the same good work.
