Pro tip: Watch your backfill compaction on slopes
Had a small slide last week because we rushed the compaction (nobody got hurt, but it was close). Take the extra time to check each layer before moving on.

Back in Portland, I saw a driveway wash out because the gravel base wasn't compacted right. It's a common thread in so many projects, not just construction. People focus on the finish line and skip the boring prep work. Then they're shocked when things fail under pressure.

Rushing the basics always bites you later. Saw the same thing when my neighbor tried to shortcut his deck foundation.

Nah, rushing isn't always the root cause. Sometimes you can do everything by the book and still get a slide if the soil type is wrong for that slope or water starts pooling where it shouldn't. I've seen perfect compaction fail because nobody checked what was going in the hole first. The real fix is knowing your specific site conditions, not just clocking more hours on the compactor. A quick soil test and watching the weather can save you more time than triple-checking every layer.
