I finally saw the point of haiku by writing one each day

I used to think haiku were too simple (just nature stuff, you know). But a poet friend explained how every word has weight. So I began writing one each day. Now I catch tiny details in my walks. Poetry feels more alive to me now.

Watching someone get excited about haiku feels like seeing a person discover their own hands. So you mean to tell me that writing the same short poem every single day actually did something for you? I would have guessed it was just a good way to run out of things to say about clouds. But you're seriously out there noticing tiny moss patches and spiderwebs now? I guess forcing yourself to find three lines worth of meaning in your boring walk does train your brain. The joke is that it sounds like a chore but it actually rewires how you look at stuff. Now everything is a potential haiku, isn't it.

My grandma's backyard in Phoenix seemed empty until she made me count different cactus types for a school project. After that, I kept seeing all these tiny shifts in the spines and the way the shadows hit them at 4pm. It's like any practice that makes you look close just sticks with you.
