Last summer in Portland, I watched a chimney sweep load his truck and totally got the band thing. That black dust on dark clothes looks just like rock show gear from far away. People don't run into soot every day, so their mind goes to music first. Your ash-covered kit probably reminds them of a drummer after a gig. It's a fair mix-up if you ask me.
