Heard a guy at the con in Atlanta say something that got me thinking
I was waiting in line for a panel and this guy was talking about how he only watches anime with a score above 8.0 on MyAnimeList. He said anything lower was a waste of time. It made me realize how much we might miss by sticking to numbers. I think some of my favorite shows, like 'Land of the Lustrous', wouldn't have made the cut early on. Do you ever feel like ratings stop you from trying something new?

Seriously, that's such a weird way to pick shows. I used to do something similar by only checking out the top-rated stuff on a streaming site. I almost skipped this weird little sci-fi movie because it had like two stars, but my friend made me watch it and it was amazing. You can miss so much good stuff if you let a number make up your mind for you. Some of the best stories are the ones that not everyone gets right away.

That guy at the con only watches stuff above an 8.0? That's a wild way to live.

My old roommate had a hard rule about only playing games with Metacritic scores above 85. He missed out on so many fun, weird titles that became our inside jokes. I finally got him to try this janky indie game by just putting it on when he was in the room. Now it's his favorite. Sometimes you just have to ignore the numbers and let something surprise you.
