My brother told me to skip the first 12 episodes of One Piece...

He said the Arlong Park arc was the real start and everything before was filler. I finally tried it his way and honestly... I felt totally lost. I missed the whole setup for Luffy's crew and why they even matter. Ended up going back to episode 1 after 3 tries to get into it. Anyone else get bad anime advice that almost ruined a show for you?

Terrible advice. Skipping the Baratie and Syrup Village arcs is crazy. You miss Zoro's promise and Usopp's whole deal. That early stuff builds the crew's bond. Starting at Arlong Park robs the emotional payoff. Your brother was dead wrong.

My brother started at Arlong Park and got hooked for life. The emotional core of Nami's story works fine as a first big moment. You can always go back for the earlier stuff if the show grabs you.
