My friend told me to skip the first 24 episodes of One Piece

He said the Arlong Park arc was the real start and everything before was filler. I tried it and felt totally lost with the characters and their goals. Now I'm going back to watch from episode 1. Has anyone else gotten bad advice on where to start a long series?

Oh man, my buddy tried to start Game of Thrones from season three once. He was so confused he gave up on the whole show.

Starting in the middle of a story that big is asking for trouble. The Red Wedding makes zero sense without knowing Robb's whole arc. You miss all the setup for the Purple Wedding too. Jumping to season three skips the entire War of the Five Kings... it's just a bunch of people yelling in a room for no reason.
