Finally bought a $150 thermal camera for my phone to find heat leaks in compressors, and it's already paid for itself.

That's a solid find for compressor work. I mean, those cheaper phone thermal cams are great for spotting big issues, but idk if they're super accurate for actual temperature readings. Might just show you the general hot spot, which is still super useful.

Yeah, that's a good point from mark361. Have you ever tried using one of those phone cameras on something you knew the exact temp of? I did once on a motor and the number was way off, like twenty degrees. It's still a cool tool for finding the problem area fast, but you can't trust the reading like a real meter. Makes you wonder how many people are making calls based on bad numbers.

My buddy at the shop was convinced his thermal phone add-on was dead on. Checked a known-good bearing with a contact probe and the cam said it was 190! The probe read 152, so he almost ordered a part for no reason. He only trusts it for spotting differences now, not the actual number.
