I called bogus on that Viking sunstone crystal for a decade

Back in 2011 I read about the Iceland spar calcite and figured it was just wishful thinking by some academics who wanted their digs funded. Then a friend studying navigation in the North Atlantic showed me how it actually works under cloudy skies at 45 degrees north latitude. Has anyone here tried replicating the refraction test with a modern replica?

Yeah I tried it with a cheap replica. It sorta kinda works but honestly it's more of a party trick than a real navigation tool.

Oh really, did you try holding it up to the actual night sky or just your ceiling?
