Rant: A guy at the Flying J in Barstow told me to strap my car by the bumpers and I can't stop laughing
I was hauling my brother's old Civic from Phoenix to Sacramento two weeks ago and stopped for gas at the Flying J off I-15. Some guy in a beat up Silverado watched me run my straps through the wheels and just shook his head at me. He walks over and goes, real serious face, "You gotta hook the bumpers, that's how the pros do it, wheels let it walk right off the trailer." I just nodded and said thanks because I wasn't about to argue with a stranger at 9pm. But the whole drive up the 5 I kept thinking about it, because I've pulled maybe 40 cars this way and never once had one shift even an inch. I get why people think bumpers are sturdy, they look solid, but they're basically tinfoil compared to a wheel chock and a good strap. Also half the cars out there have plastic bumper covers now, so what exactly is he hooking onto? Anyway it gave me a decent laugh and I still wonder what that guy's trailer looks like. Has anyone actually tried the bumper thing and lived to tell about it, or is this just old timer nonsense?
This is the same kind of guy who tells you to change your oil every 3k miles with whatever's on sale at Walmart and swears by it. There's a whole tribe of them out there handing out advice with total confidence and zero real world testing behind it. The bumper thing works if you're moving a riding mower around the yard, not a car down the interstate at 70. He probably saw his uncle do it once in 1987 and made it his whole personality.
