Had to choose between the standard High Sierra Trail route or a new detour last August

The ranger station said the usual bridge over Lone Pine Creek was out, so we had to pick: a 12 mile detour adding a full day, or trying a risky, unofficial ford upstream. We went with the long detour, which was tough but safe. It added an extra night's food weight and we had to camp at a higher, colder spot than planned. The views from the detour were actually amazing, but it messed up our whole schedule. Anyone else faced a major route change like that in the Sierras? How did you handle the resupply math?

That resupply math is the worst part. We got stuck adding a day once and had to stretch food by cutting out hot meals and just eating bars for dinner. Always pack a few extra dense calories, like a block of cheese or a summer sausage, just in case. It saved our butts when a storm rolled in and we were stuck an extra night.

Yeah, the calorie math always gets me too. I started bringing an extra half pound of peanut butter in a small jar, the kind that's just nuts and salt. It doesn't need cooking and a couple big spoonfuls can turn a sad dinner of bars into something that actually feels like a meal. That stuff got me through an unexpected cold snap last fall when we were moving way slower than planned.

I've even used it as a fire starter in a real pinch.
