Just realized my quiet neighbor was the worst one on the block

I used to think loud parties were the only bad neighbor problem. But last summer in Austin, my next-door neighbor was dead silent for months. He never made noise, never had guests, never even mowed his lawn. I thought I hit the jackpot until the city sent a notice about a rat infestation traced right to his yard. Turns out he was hoarding old furniture and trash inside his garage, and the rats spread to like 5 houses on our street. My landlord had to pay $800 for extermination just for my unit. Now I actually prefer the guy who blasts music on weekends over someone who hides a mess. Anyone else find the quiet neighbor can be the sneakiest problem?

Kind of a stretch to call him the "quietest" neighbor though. The guy was clearly making noise by not doing anything, just in a way that wasn't loud parties. I had a neighbor like that once, super quiet but turned out he was running a business out of his garage fixing lawnmowers. The smell of gas and oil was constant, and he'd leave engines running at 6 AM. Quiet doesn't always mean peaceful. It can just mean the problem is hidden better.

Man, that sounds rough, I feel for you dealing with that crap early in the morning.

Dude YES, @dylan_bell totally nailed it. Quiet neighbors are just better at hiding their mess. I had a guy who never made a sound for like a year, turned out he was running an illegal auto repair shop in his backyard. The oil stains and battery acid were killing all the plants around our complex, and the landlord had to pay for a full cleanup. Loud and annoying is one thing, but quiet and destructive is way worse because you don't see it coming until it's already costing you money.
